CLARK HUMPHREY sees the past and future at once
Now We Are Four

Yep, we've been shoving these monthly missives out the door for a full quadrennium. (Yes, that's a real word. Trust me on this.)

We've seen ever-taller and costlier buildings go up. We've seen a few old favorites (Bethel Temple, the Speakeasy Cafe, the Commodore Hotel) go down. We've seen shops and restaurants come and, in some cases, go. We've seen stupid acts of senseless violence, and people coming together in celebration.

We've seen parades, protests, grand openings, wakes, and an awful lot of everyday life.

And there's a lot we haven't seen.

We haven't seen a solution to the Viaduct mess, a new monorail, or a restarted Waterfront Streetcar.

We haven't seen a green park, a community center, or a public school in Belltown.

We plan on sticking around long enough to see at least one or two of these. And a lot of other things as well. In the coming months, we'll cover a wider spectrum of events in greater downtown. We'll be "Documenting Downtown Seattle" in greater breadth and depth, from Seattle Center to SoDo, from the freeway to the bay. For decades, Seattle's political dichotomy used to be a divide between "downtown" and "the neighborhoods." Now, downtown IS a neighborhood, and should be documented as such.

We're seeking additional writers and photographers to help us grow. Email editor@belltownmessenger.com for particulars.

While the Messenger's peripheral vision is being augmented, we'll still keep an eagle eye on the peculiar half-square-mile zone we call home. In November, we'll have a special theme of "Yesterdays." We'll have extra material about our artificially-flat neighborhood's past. You might ask whether this would have any relation to the fact that yr. ob'd't editor's newest photo-history tome, Seattle's Belltown, arrives in stores that same month.

Your suspicions just might be correct.
