A 9-year-old boy survived an attack that killed three members of his family at Maquoketa Caves State Park Campground on Friday, according to Cedar Falls’ mayor. Four people died in the three killings at the state park. The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation says three members of a Cedar Falls family were found dead in a tent. They have been identified as 42-year-old Tyler Schmidt, 42-year-old Sarah Schmidt and 6-year-old Lula Schmidt. DCI has named Anthony Sherwin, 23, of La Vista, Nebraska, as the suspect. Investigators determined Sherwin died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was found west of the park. According to Cedar Falls Mayor Rob Green, Tyler and Sara’s 9-year-old son, Arlo, survived the attack. He posted this information on his Facebook page on Saturday morning. The boy is safe, said Mayor Sarah, who works at the Cedar Falls Public Library. “The Cedar Falls Library will be closed tomorrow for the staff who loved and worked with Sarah,” Green said in a Facebook post. Green said he knows his family well. Devastated,” Green said. “I know Sarah well, and she and her family are regular walkers here in the Sartori Park neighborhood.” Green added, “Please extend some extra grace to Schmidt’s many friends, neighbors and co-workers as we try to process this terrible tragedy. . “Service and other memorial information is expected to be announced in the coming days.
