Representative of the Democratic Party. Sean Coston will win his party’s nomination for CNN projects in the 6th congressional district of Illinois.

Gaston defeated another incumbent, Mary Newman. Goston has twice served in Congress since rolling out his district in the Chicago suburbs in 2018.

This seat, created during the district restructuring process last year, was suitable for both incumbents: Newman lives outside the new district, and Gaston lives in it. But most of Newman’s constituencies from the district he currently represents are in the new 6th district, while most of Gaston’s current constituencies have been transferred to another district.

Newman was in his first term, but is facing a House Ethics Committee inquiry into allegations that he may have promised federal employment as a primary challenge in return for their political support. Newman has denied the allegations and said the complaints were politically motivated.

Newman was elected to Congress in 2020, ousting one of the party’s most conservative House members, Rep. Dan Lipinski.

Last year, a pro-Israel group campaigned against Newman for his vote against $ 1 billion to fund Israel’s Iron Dome rocket shield.
